Medical & Healthcare

Patient care and treatment centres around an NHI (National Health Index) number. The NHI number is a unique identifier that is assigned to every person who uses health and disability support services in New Zealand. A person’s NHI number is stored on the National Health Index along with that person’s demographic details. The NHI and associated NHI numbers are used to help with the planning, coordination and provision of health and disability support services across New Zealand.

IN PATIENT ADMISSION

For elective or trauma treatment at a private or public hospital the first step is to admit the patient. This process includes producing a patient ID wristband and several labels for any test purposes with all patient details including their NHI number. This becomes their passport within a healthcare facility.

WITH PATIENT TRANSITIONS

The NHI is associated with the Medical Warnings System (MWS), which is designed to warn healthcare providers of any known risk factors that may be important when making clinical decisions about individual patient care.

The wristband accompanies patients as they move through their treatment journey, if they transfer within a hospital campus then at each new treatment centre the ward clerk will print around eight patient ID labels. One to update and replace the current wristband with new ward location details and the balance which is put in the patient notes. This ensures the test results are delivered back to the right place.

IN MEDICAL LABORATORIES

Whether bedside within a hospital campus or at an external testing facility it is vital to accurately label the test samples of the patient needing testing before sending them to a laboratory for analysis.

TO MONITOR ASSETS

Every healthcare facility has assets and monitoring those assets in terms of location, condition and any maintenance is a full-time job much of which can be done (a) within a financial system for asset value and (b) within an Excel spread sheet for asset location.

Saito have observed that the patient transfer can involve several assets – a bed, mattress, drip stand, etc. Transfer is usually undertaken via an orderly. A suggestion that we have made to several hospitals is (a) to associate a mattress to a bed with a barcode and (b) for the orderly to scan the patient out of one ward and into another.
