Hi-Res Inkjet Integration with Wood Engineering Technology
Wood Engineering Technology Limited (WET) was formed in 2003 by a group of Auckland-based investors. In 2007 WET had a breakthrough development enabling low value logs to be turned into high grade lumber under the brand name OEL (Optimised Engineered Lumber™). The patented process developed by Wood Engineering Technology can allow lower value non- saw log output from Radiata pine plantations, to be manufactured efficiently into engineered wood products. The product is high value certified structural lumber for the New Zealand and global building industry.
The OEL™ process involves breaking down logs into small pieces and reconstituting to meet detailed product specifications. OEL™ allows more of each tree to be converted into high-quality structural products. OEL™ products will both compete compliment other engineered wood products to support the higher utilisation of sustainable wood in all buildings of the future. In 2017 WET built the first commercial-sized modular plant in Gisborne with adjacent land available for additional plants or expansion.
WET sought a partner to provide hi-res inkjet printing technology for the new Gisborne plant. The solution required interfaces into Omron production line controls and inventory management system to print in real time directly onto timber – a data matrix barcode containing: 14 digit GTIN; 10-digit serial number ;14 digit GS1 location code; 8-digit production date; an EAN 13 barcode, human readable: brand (OEL brand), serial number (10 numeric), strength grade (4 Alpha – GL10), test result (7 Alpha ), service class (Service Class 1), adhesive type (Adhesive Type 1), appearance grade (Appearance Grade 1) standard numbers (AS/NZS 1328.2:1998, NZS 3640:2003), certification reference (1000324HHH). Hazard Class Number (H1.2), Preservative code number (11) plant location GLN (14 numeric), production date (8 alpha), label type (null, Reject, Qualification Test, Face Joint Test).
Saito worked with WET integration companies and delivered the NEO 70 Hi-Res inkjet printing system which is proven in imaging directly on to timber in New Zealand operating within plants in Napier, as well as across Australia and Europe.
